Agriculture in Norway
The Gulf Stream that reaches here means that Norway enjoys a milder climate than would be expected due to its latitude, and the entire western coast of Norway remains ice-free even in winter.
In any case, only 3.5% of the country’s surface is made up of agricultural land. This surface is distributed mainly between the coastal regions, favored by the Gulf Stream, and the internal regions located at low altitude. Given Norway’s latitude, the fertile lands can largely only be used as meadows or pastures. The rest is used to grow mainly vegetables, wheat, cereals and potatoes.
Grazing livestock for milk and meat production is the backbone of Norwegian agriculture. Added to this is the raising of pigs and chickens. It is not surprising that the main products of Norwegian agriculture are: milk, meat and eggs which represent 2/3 of the total GDP generated by agricultural products.
Potatoes and cereals are mainly grown in eastern and central Norway, especially barley and oats, which are mainly used as feed grains. Only a small part of the cultivated cereal area is dedicated to wheat. Fruit crops, (apples, pears, plums, cherries) are found in the south and southwest of the country. Due to the climate, tubers and cabbages are mainly grown in Norway.
Even in Norway the amount of production per cultivated agricultural area has increased in recent decades. Thanks to the development of technology and machinery, there are fewer and fewer people working in agriculture but production is increasing.
